We know that Northview people love to be in God’s Word and often ask for direction on different devotional apps and reading plans.

While there are several good options available through various sources, we’d like to encourage you to join in our Northview Devotional Plan which will guide you to read and reflect on the passages preached in our weekend sermons!

We hope this will unite our congregation around the study of God’s Word, and help us to more readily absorb and apply the great teaching provided by our preaching pastors.

Each week we’ll be providing a suggested schedule for working through a passage slowly (15 minutes a day). You’ll need a Bible and a notebook or blank paper to record your observations.

Each day we include a reminder to pray. If you are new to the Adoration / Confession / Supplication method, here are some questions to help guide you as you pray:

  • Adoration: What can you praise God for today?
  • Confession: What thoughts / attitudes / actions might you need to confess to God today?
  • Supplication: What will you ask God for today?

DAY ONE

Jesus’ Genealogy – A Survey

Read Luke 3:23-38

  • Who is the first person listed in Luke’s version of Jesus’s genealogy (v 23)?
  • Who is the last person listed in Luke’s version of Jesus’ genealogy (v 38)?
  • In what order does Luke list names? Ascending (from ancient times forward) or Descending (from current times backward)?

Reflection

  • How does it help you to know who you descended from? eg) does it help you understand yourself? Does it help you to know your place in the world / where you “fit in” / why you are the way you are?

Prayer: Pray today for your family. Pray for their needs and/or praise God for the blessings they are experiencing. If your relationship with your family needs to be repaired, pray for God’s guidance and wisdom.

DAY TWO

Jesus’ Genealogy – A Comparison

Read Matthew 1:1-17

  • Who is the first person listed in Matthew’s version of Jesus’ genealogy (v 2)?
  • Who is the last person listed in Matthew’s version of Jesus’ genealogy (v 16)?
  • In what order does Matthew list names? Ascending (from ancient times forward) or Descending (from current times backward)?
    • Compare the answers to these questions to the answers from yesterday (Luke’s version).
    • Why do you think Matthew and Luke arranged Jesus’ genealogy differently?

Prayer: Matthew emphasizes that Jesus descended from Abraham, the father of the Jewish faith. As you pray today, thank God for the people of faith in your family. If you are the first Christian in your family, thank him for saving you and pray that your faith would impact future generations.

DAY THREE

Jesus’ Genealogy – Famous People – Part 1

Read Luke 3:38

  • What does Luke call Adam in this text: the son of who?
  • Why do you think he identifies Adam in this way?

Read Luke 3:22

  • This text comes right before the genealogy. What does God call Jesus in this verse?

Read Luke 4:3 and Luke 4:9.

  • What name does Satan attribute to Jesus in these verses?

Luke identifies Adam as the son of God in the genealogy, and Jesus as the Son of God multiple times in his gospel. By calling both Adam and Jesus the “son of God”, Luke is comparing them to each other. Why do you think he’s doing this? (If you need a hint, see Romans 5:12, 5:17-19)

Prayer: Praise God for sending his son, Jesus, so that all who believe in him can be made righteous!!

DAY FOUR

Jesus’ Genealogy – Famous People – Part 2

Read Luke 3:34

  • Which names are listed in this verse?

Read Genesis 12:1-3

  • Who is God speaking to here?
  • What does He promise this individual in verse 3?

Read Genesis 26:1-5

  • Who is God speaking to here?
  • What does He promise this individual in verse 4?

Read Genesis 28:10-15

  • Who is God speaking to here?
  • What does He promise this individual in verse 14?

Prayer: Praise God for blessing all the families of the world through Jesus, the descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!

DAY FIVE

Jesus’ Genealogy – Famous People – Part 3

Read Luke 3:31

  • Who is the most famous person listed in this verse?

Read 2 Samuel 7:12-13 and 7:16

  • Who is speaking to whom in these verses? (check back to 2 Samuel 7:4-5 if you’re not sure)
  • What promise does God make to this individual?

Read Luke 1:30-33

  • What information is emphasized about Jesus’ identity here?

Prayer: Praise God for his faithfulness in fulfilling all these ancient promises, and pray that you would learn to trust God’s faithfulness in your own life.
