We know that Northview people love to be in God’s Word and often ask for direction on different devotional apps and reading plans.

While there are several good options available through various sources, we’d like to encourage you to join in our Northview Devotional Plan which will guide you to read and reflect on the passages preached in our weekend sermons!

We hope this will unite our congregation around the study of God’s Word, and help us to more readily absorb and apply the great teaching provided by our preaching pastors.

Each week we’ll be providing a suggested schedule for working through a passage slowly (15 minutes a day). You’ll need a Bible and a notebook or blank paper to record your observations.

Each day we include a reminder to pray. If you are new to the Adoration / Confession / Supplication method, here are some questions to help guide you as you pray:

  • Adoration: What can you praise God for today?
  • Confession: What thoughts / attitudes / actions might you need to confess to God today?
  • Supplication: What will you ask God for today?

DAY ONE

THE AUTHOR:  Read Luke 1:1-4

What do these verses tell us about the author of this gospel, Luke (identified as “I, myself, me” in the text)?

  • Why is he writing this gospel?  (v 3 and v 4)
  • Why does he believe he has enough information to write this gospel?  What does he say he has done to acquaint himself with the events that he is going to include in his gospel?
  • How does he describe the way that he is going to organize the material in his gospel?

Pray in Adoration / Confession / Supplication

DAY TWO

THE RECIPIENT:  Read Luke 1:1-4

What do these verses tell us about the recipient of the gospel?

  • Who is Luke writing to?
  • What do we learn about him in these verses?

Read Acts 1:1-3

  • Who is Luke writing to?
  • What is Luke’s “first book” (the Gospel of Luke) about according to Acts 1:1-3?

Pray in Adoration / Confession / Supplication

DAY THREE

THE SOURCES:  Read Luke 1:1-4

What does Luke say about his “sources” as he seeks to write the gospel?

  • How does he describe the people who have told him about the events?
  • When he chooses people to interview as eyewitnesses, what seems to be important to him? How long were these people with Jesus?

Read Acts 1:15-26

In this passage, the disciples, under the leadership of Peter, are choosing an apostle to replace Judas.

  • What are the necessary criteria for Judas’ replacement? (v 21-22)
  • How do these criteria relate to the criteria which Luke has in place for his sources (look back to Luke 1:1-4)?
  • Why is it necessary for a witness or an apostle to be with Jesus ‘from the beginning’?

Pray in Adoration / Confession / Supplication

DAY FOUR

OTHER GOSPELS: Read Luke 1:1-4

  • What does Luke tell Theophilus in verse 1?
  • Who do you think are the “many” who have undertaken to compile a narrative about Jesus?

Glance at  Matthew 1:1-17.

  • How does Matthew begin his gospel?

Glance at Mark 1:1-4.

  • How does Mark begin his gospel?

Glance at John 1:1-5.

  • How does John begin his gospel?
  • How is Luke’s introduction different from the other gospel writers?

Pray in Adoration / Confession / Supplication

DAY FIVE

THE AUTHOR (again!): Read the following verses and record what they tell you about Luke, the author of this gospel.

Colossians 4:10-18

2 Timothy 4:9-11

Philemon 1:23-24

The three letters above (Colossians, 2 Timothy and Philemon) were all written by the apostle Paul.

  • What do you learn about the relationship between Paul and Luke as you read these texts?

As you prepare to listen to this text preached at church on Sunday, reflect on what you have learned during the last few days about the author and recipient of this gospel.

  • How do you think this background knowledge will help you to hear and to understand what Luke chooses to highlight in his gospel?

Pray in Adoration / Confession / Supplication
