If you’ve been around Northview in the last month or so, you will know that this fall we have picked up our sermon series of 1 Corinthians, with our current focus being on Paul’s discussion of spiritual gifts in chapters 12 through 14. However, if you were away last Saturday, you will have missed our Serve Weekend. Let this be your chance to be caught up by me!

We hold a Serve Weekend a couple of times a year as an opportunity both to highlight the specific ministry areas at Central Abby that would benefit the most from some additional volunteers, and to encourage attenders who are not currently serving to consider whether there is an area that they might be able to use the spiritual gifts that 1 Corinthians 12:7 informs us are to be used for the common good of the assembled church.

You may not realize it, but each week, we need 35 to 40 volunteers to make our services run smoothly. From the greeters and hospitality team that welcomes you, to the kitchen team that makes and serves dinner, to the ushers who guide you into the sanctuary, the worship team that leads us in song, the tech volunteers who help us know the words of the song, and the Northview Kids leaders and teachers downstairs, our Serve Team is invaluable. (There are other volunteers but the sentence was running on long enough.)

So, last weekend, we offered Serve Cards to those in attendance. And, as I always do on these weekends, I encouraged those people who already faithfully serve (often in a number of roles) to let the cards pass them by, so that people who are not currently serving in any way can be the focus of the call.

But, if you weren’t there, you didn’t hear that! And if you both weren’t there, and aren’t currently serving, then I really hope you are reading this! Because there are a few areas that we could very much benefit from your service. 

Specifically, Brittany and our Children’s Ministry team would be very grateful to have some more volunteers to lead in our Northview Kids classes. And Emily would love it if there were a few more people available to help prepare and serve coffee and food at our weekly meals. Even if you are only available to serve once a month, or to put your name in as a spare volunteer who can be called on every now and then, we would love to have you on the team!

Finally, as a concluding encouragement, let me assure you that if you are feeling disconnected, or not at home, or missing out in any way, then serving at church is easily the quickest way to get to know your brothers and sisters in the faith at Central Abby. It truly is a team effort, and you can be a part of it – maybe now is the time!
