As a Church, we believe that it’s important to be investing in our local community. We’re excited about the impact these ministries are having in the community and wanted to tell you a little more about them and how you can get involved in local missions in Abbotsford and Mission!

Inasmuch Community Society

Inasmuch Community Society provides a safe home, comfortable furnishings, good food, quality clothing, medical care, transportation and more to refugee claimants. They walk alongside family members through the various stages of their application to remain in Canada; They help them find good jobs, and support their transition from the Inasmuch home to a place of their own. The families arrive with various levels of English proficiency, english teachers develop and conduct weekly lessons specific to each family member’s needs or job goals. Since summer 2017, they have hosted and helped 26 refugee claimants at their two houses and have helped another 17 outside of Inasmuch. They have also delivered over 220 hours of English education.

Current Service Opportunities:
        • ESL teachers to help refugee claimants with various levels of English.  Various day time and possible evening schedules available.
        • 2-3 people to help with bi-weekly maintenance of the houses and yards.
        • "On call" drivers to help folks get to appointments in Vancouver and locally.  Day time and usually weekdays.

Cyrus Centre

Every night, there are homeless and vulnerable youth on Fraser Valley streets. Most of them have run away from an abusive home, were abandoned by their parents, have no money and no safe place to go. Cyrus Centre provides homeless youth, 18 and under, with a temporary, safe place to stay while working toward a long-term solution. Nationally, 1 in 5 homeless persons is a youth. Many are fleeing abuse, poverty, exploitation and drugs. Youth thrive when they can live, work and learn together and the staff at Cyrus Centre support them every step of the way.

Current Service Opportunities:
      • Meal Providers: Sign up on your own or with a community group, family or friends make and drop off frozen meals or serve a meal at the centre. We serve meals every single day so call to see what openings we currently have. (Abbotsford and Chilliwack).
      • Resource Centre: Spend 4 hours a week in Cyrus Centre’s Drop-In Resource Centre building relationships with youth and taking part in the daily routine. (Abbotsford and Chilliwack)
      • Food Bank Delivery and Kitchen Organizer: We need 1-2 volunteers to pick up food from the food bank on Friday mornings and bring them to Cyrus Centre. The volunteer(s) would be responsible for organizing the food in the fridge and kitchen. (Only Abbotsford)

Youth Unlimited

Youth Unlimited is committed to extending Christ’s love to youth who otherwise are falling through the cracks in Greater Vancouver. Their purpose is to see young lives transformed through relationships. Studies show that a trusting relationship with a caring adult makes all the difference for vulnerable youth. Because of this, Youth Unlimited workers are motivated to connect youth with safe and compassionate mentors in their community. Whether volunteers are flipping pancakes at breakfast club, leading art workshops or connecting with youth at a drop-in center, they are intentionally meeting teens where they’re at and walking alongside them.

Current Service Opportunities:
      • Noon hour support at local middle and high schools and various sports coaching opportunities (must have daytime availability).
      • An after school club for Middle School youth on Wednesdays from 2:15-4:15.
      • Two evenings a month (likely Thursday or Friday) for 3 hours for community youth nights.
      • Baking cookies for after school clubs and evening youth nights monthly (or as often as able).

Abbotsford Food Bank

The mission of the Food Bank is to Nurture families and cultivate community within our city by providing supplemental food assistance and other supportive programs. They believe that people should not go hungry, every person deserves care, dignity, and respect, and many people become poor due to circumstances beyond their control. In addition to food distribution, the Food Bank is able to offer guests, free dental care at an on-site clinic, kids’ summer camps, seasonal fresh produce, and other exciting programs. The Food Bank serves roughly 4400 individuals every month. Food insecurity is in every community, families, single parents, seniors, our friends and neighbours, less than 10% of food bank guests are homeless

Current Service Opportunities:
      • Food Delivery: We need 1 volunteer to deliver food to partner locations a few mornings each week.
      • Food Recovery: Individuals or small groups needed to sort perishable food received each morning. Sign yourself up or grab 3-4 friends and sign up a team!
