- Spring/Fall Yard Clean-Up or Light Work
Each spring and fall our beautiful, tree-lined grounds need to be cleaned, raked and prepared for the change of season. If you’re interested in being part of a team of workers to help with these chores, it would save us valuable financial assets. This could include raking, mulching, planting or weeding, window washing or trimming.
- Maintenance
Mercy does not keep a full-time maintenance person on staff at this point. If you are a handyman/woman, we we could sure use your help!
- Board Members
We are currently looking for two more board members who are passionate about Mercy Ministries with either business, charitable, legal or accounting expertise. Our Board will interview the candidates to determine if the potential member has the experience we need.
The possibilities are as endless as your creativity!
Please note that the minimum age to volunteer at Mercy is 19 years old. Also, due to legal requirements, privacy policies, and the severity of the issues of our residents, volunteers at Mercy Ministries are very limited in their interaction with the resident of our homes and will NOT be involved in any of the following at any time: providing counselling or ministry to residents in the Mercy Ministries home, spending any unsupervised or one-on-one time with the residents in the Mercy Ministries home, engaging in any of the resident application review process or driving any Mercy Ministries vehicles with or without residents.
The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world. See http://www.salvationarmy.ca for more info.

- English conversation class facilitators
Volunteers help facilitate discussions on a wide variety of topics (which are planned by the coordinator in advance). Volunteers typically lead a group of 2-4 newcomers that are at a similar English level. Groups range from beginner to advanced and we have participants from every continent. Time commitment is 1-2 hours per week.
- Support workers for low-literacy and multi-barriered clients
Volunteers assist with a specialized language program for multi-barriered clients. The majority of these clients come from refugee backgrounds, and many are strugling to gain basic literacy skills. Volunteers are needed to help teach English and Canadian life skills, as well as to offer childcare while parents attend classes. Time commitment is approx. 2 hours per week.
- One-on-one or small group matching program for newcomers
Volunteers are needed to assist immigrant and refugee newcomers through a friendship-based matching program. These volunteers spend time with newcomers practicing English, answering questions about Canadian culture, showing them around the community, and assisting with questions they may have about life in Canada. Time commitment is 1-2 hours per week. Meeting times are flexible.
- One-on-one employment mentoring for immigrant professionals
Volunteers from professional backgrounds (doctors, nurses, lawyers, accountants, teachers, etc.) are needed to help mentor newcomers with a similar educational/work background during their search for employment. Time commitment is flexible; generally 2-4 hours per month.
