I’ve always wondered why Pharaoh’s magicians didn’t just…well…lie!
Seriously. I’m a magician. If we’re talking about anything close to the same kind of magic, it’s the art of hiding what is really going on and implying something else for entertainment value. It’s like acting or puppetry. It’s not real at all, but it’s fun and people allow themselves to believe it’s real for a few minutes for escapism.
But, back in biblical times, it would have been just as phony, but the magicians would have passed it off as an authentic supernatural power.
So, given the fact that magic is bunk and the magicians knew it was bunk (they knew they had doves up their sleeves and in their coat—they knew they didn’t produce them out of nothing) —why didn’t they just continue the lie when Pharaoh asked about his dream and say, “Yes, sir, I know exactly what that dream means…wow…you are so blessed…the gods are telling you to give me a big pay raise.”
Who would know?
