And God Remembered Us

Back in January, I had just returned from studying in Los Angeles for a couple of weeks when I realized that the text I was preaching on was going to be very difficult for me. My wife and I have struggled with infertility for a number of years after having our second son. Like so many others whose plans for children have gone unfulfilled, we were working out how to trust God even when we didn’t understand what he was doing in our lives.

So, it was with this experience that I came to the first chapter of the Book of Samuel. The story is about an infertile woman named Hannah who pleads with God for a son. It says that in response to her prayers, “God remembered Hannah” and gave her a son who would become Israel’s last judge. I love the story and was actually pretty excited to preach most of it, but I knew that I was going to have to talk about infertility. This made me kind of sick. I could just imagine how my wife would feel listening to me talk about God answering this woman’s prayer when he hasn’t done that for us. Even worse, I did not want to add salt to the wounds of all those couples in our church who were praying and pleading with God for a child, but the only response they were receiving was silence. So, I found it difficult to preach that weekend, but also very encouraging. I thought, “Maybe God will remember us after all these years. Maybe my Jeanne will be another Hannah.”

And with that I prayed and asked God for a baby. Fast forward five weeks and picture my wife coming out from the bathroom, pregnancy test in hand, wiping tears of astonishment and joy from her eyes as she tells me that she is expecting our third child. Since then she has been sick as a dog most days and very tentative about whether she would miscarry, but she is fourteen weeks along this week and I am writing to tell you that God has remembered us. Pretty cool, eh?

Fabulous! To say that God is awesome just doesn’t cover it sometimes!

praise the lord, we waited for 9 and a half years for the lord to answer our prayer, and now our kids are 19 and 17,

God is great in all that he does, and all we have to do is boldly ask him, and he will give us the answer but in his time, not ours

We will keep you in our prayers

Then many will give thanks on your behalf for the gracious favor granted you in answer to the prayers of many.
(adlib from 2 Cor.1:11)

Thank you Lord for this timely and precious answer to prayers!

That is very cool, Jeff. I knew from our conversations that you have a heart for the childless ones. I was very impressed to see one of the “cardboard testimonies” last weekend by a couple, who had been identified by infertility, now walking in hope. In my day job at Hope Adoption, I work with infertile or miscarrying couples all the time. I sometimes wonder how much we Christians would take seriously the command to care for the orphans, taking them into our hearts and families, if we were not “pressured” by life circumstances.

Hey there:  that is so exciting for you. We waited for 11 years before getting pregnant with our first.  I used every home pregnancy kit there was. 2 years later we had our second one.  God is so good!  Congrats!

This is awesome.Bev and I had gone through similar experience many years ago so we share in your joy.
What intrigues me about this blog is when you say you are working out how to trust God.
At our men’s meeting this past saturday we had a very good discussion on faith and trust.Does one come before the other?can you have faith without trust? Can you have trust without faith? Two of us shared how it took a life threatening disease for us to truly trust the lord for a cure.We knew we were faithful but why did it have to go to such an extreme for us to truly trust Him? It would be interesting to hear other responses to these questions.
