WINTER 2012 - CLASSES
In Fall we hosted an “Open Session” in which all women participated together in a study of the Spiritual Disciplines entitled “Her Legacy”. If you would like to view these sessions and the discussion and homework papers for each they are available on-line. As a result of discussions held during this session, we determined a need to allow women to “go deeper” in the study of specific spiritual disciplines, and so have identified a variety of classes to meet this need in the coming semester. Feel free to view the video below, and read the descriptions as you choose your course. We hope to see you soon!
GOSPEL
So Great A Salvation- Facilitated by Edna Harms, this study focuses on understanding the subject of the Gospel. Following Tim Keller’s “Leaders’s Guide:A Commentary on Galations”, the course identifies what the gospel is all about and how it works in the life of a believer. Each class is prepared for group studies with questions, times for reflection and application. Edna says, “As I’ve applied the truth to my own life I have come into a new freedom in Christ. Now I’m dying to share it!”
A practicum in witnessing - Facilitated by Gloria Fama, participants in this course will be searching the scriptures for concise verses on the gospel and discovering what the scriptures are saying so they develop a deeper understanding of the magnitude of the gospel. Each participant will have an opportunity to prepare a presentation of the gospel and practise sharing it with other members of the class. Gloria says, “We will watch some helpful videos and discuss them, there will be hand-outs to discuss, and we will have some guest speakers come to tell of their approach. We will also be praying about all that we will learn and asking our Father to prepare us to speak the gospel into lives of people around us. It won’t be a class where we sit and take in, but more of participation. I will be learning along with everyone else.”
PRAYER
When God’s People Pray - Facilitated by Esther Tully, this course will feature DVD teaching by Jim Cymbala and interviews of ordinary people who have received extraordinary answers to their prayers. Prayer can change lives and circumstances like nothing else can. What are the keys that unlock it’s power, that turn prayer from a mere activity into a vital link with God and all his resources? In “When God’s People Pray”, Jim Cymbala, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, explains truths about prayer that God has used to turn his own church from a tiny, struggling inner-city congregation into a vital, thriving community of believers who pray with passion, focus and faith.
BIBLE STUDY
How to Read Your Bible - Facilitated by Kristal Toews, this class will focus on providing a framework for how we approach the Bible. As we sit down to read a passage, what information should we look for to help us understand it? What guidelines should we keep in mind? The Bible consists of historical narratives, poetry, prophecy, proverbs and more - do we approach all these types of literature in the same way, or do we need to handle them differently? During class time we’ll be working through some of these questions and then applying what we learn to specific biblical passages.
LIFE ISSUES AND APPLICATION
One in a Million: Journey to your Promised Land - Facilitated by Annelisa Toews and Helen Uittenbosch, this class focusses on successfully navigating the difficult passages of life and seeing God’s hand at work in them. During the class time participants will view and discuss DVD teaching conducted by Priscilla Shirer. Workbook homework will help participants personally apply the teaching to their lives.
What did you expect? Redeeming the Realities of Marriage - Facilitated by Betty Loeppky, this class is designed to help people take an honest look at their expectations of marriage, and bring these ideas in line with biblical teaching on the subject. These sessions will help each one examine their own expectations of relationships, be it in marriage, family, and also other friendships. It’s helpful to understand that because we are the same person, regardless of what type of relationship we are in, we tend to use the same basic ways of relating (healthy or unheatlhy). Therefore, everyone can benefit from participating in this class, whether married or single. Class time will consist of viewing DVD (teaching by Paul Tripp), as well as discussion around processing and applying the ideas presented.
FREEDOM SESSION - Part 2
FREEDOM SESSION is a Christ centered healing journey designed to help move you from areas in your life where you feel stuck to greater levels of freedom and hope. It is for people who hurt and are ready to take a step towards freedom and healing. We offered Part 1 in the Fall, Part 2 is offered now in January. Please note that this class is not open for new participants. Freedom Session Part 1 will be offered again beginning September 2012.
Freedom Session is equally effective for those without any previous Christian experience and those raised in the church all their lives. We invite you to join us!
