MAY IT BE

As we were beginning to think and plan and dream about our vision for Women’s Ministry at Northview this year, we encountered a little verse in the beginning of the Christmas Story which captured our imagination.

In Luke 1, Gabriel visits Mary and relays some crazy news. She will not settle down to a normal village life with her fiancé as she likely expected.  Instead, her world will be turned upside down.  She will be given both the amazing privilege and daunting responsibility of “mothering” Israel’s Messiah.  Her family relationships, her reputation and standing in the community - everything - will be affected by this news.  At the end of Gabriel’s pronouncement, we hear:

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.  “May it be to me as you have said.” 
Luke 1:38

“May it be.”

• May it be, that my world will be turned upside down. 
• May it be, that God’s will be fulfilled. 
• May it be, that my very body will no longer by my own.
• Whatever it is, I am the Lord’s servant. May it be.

Speaking these three words, Mary voices both humility and courage.  “May it be”: I am willing to align my will to your plans, God. “May it be”: I am willing to step into the task you have given me.  I am willing to have you make me brave.

This is our prayer for the women of Northview this year.  May it be, that we will hear God and obey.  May it be that we will courageously follow where He leads.  May it be.
